You've come to the realisation that your house isn't what it used to be. You need a change. It could be that your kids and pets have crowded you out, and you need a bigger place so they can run around, and you have space to breathe. Or, maybe your kids have finally left home, and it's just you (and your partner!) rattling around in a big space and it's becoming too much of a hassle maintaining it.
First things first, you need to sell the house you're in, before you can move on to the next place. The big thing now is to style the house, to help you get the best price. You can either style it with what you have yourself, or you can get someone in to style it with your stuff or hire new things to show off your home to potential buyers.
Then what do you do with all your things? Before you just box up everything and toss it in storage, have a think about what you have and if you want to take it all to the next place. If you are downsizing, you won't have the room for it all. Even if you are moving to a bigger place, do you really need the old toys your kids haven't played with in years or clothes that don't fit anyone?
Now is the time to make some decisions about the things you own. Everything from clothes, toys, books and furniture, should be looked at because whatever you keep, will come with you to your new house. Clothing items that no longer fit, kids toys that haven't been played with in years, and excess bulky furniture are good places to start culling. If you don't want it in your new home then donate it, sell it or give to someone you know does want it. Ask the family if someone wants it before you sell or donate the item. You can do this room by room so you don't get to overwhelmed. Get the kids to help, it will make them feel a part of this new home.
Once you have decided what you do want to keep, anything that is going to storage should be boxed up and labelled properly, so that when it makes its way to your new home you will know what it is and where it needs to go.
No matter what you do, make sure you have help. Its too big of a job to do on it your own. Get either family or friends or professionals, but make sure you take care of you, so you can move on to the next great life adventure.
